The VLOOKUP Function

Published on: April 23, 2016

Welcome to the 27th Easy Excel tutorial. Today I introduce to you vlookup.

Vlookup is a very popular lookup function that allows you to find things in a table or a range depending on your criteria. It's a left to right lookup, which means that the value you're looking at should be at the very left, and the value you're looking to extract, should be in a column to its right. This means that your spreadsheets will need to be formatted for such a lookup.

To do a right to left lookup, or another type of lookup, you'll need to know the Index Match function, which will be covered in tutorial 29.

There are two types of vlookup, approximate vlookup and exact vlookup. Different situations call for the different types.
